According to the news agency Reuters, billionaire Elon Musk recently approached AI researchers about building a new research centre to offer an alternative to ChatGPT.
ChatGPT was released on November 30, although it is part of a larger collection of technologies developed by the San Francisco-based startup OpenAI, which has a close partnership with Microsoft. Since then, it has garnered millions of users, many of whom use it for work-related tasks such as drafting emails, researching subjects, and so on.
It’s part of a new breed of AI systems that can talk, generate readable text on demand, and even create new images and movies based on what they’ve learnt from a massive collection of digital books, online articles, and other material. It functions similarly to a written interaction between the AI system and the human asking the questions.
The tool is free to anyone with an internet connection and is intended to be more user-friendly. But, OpenAI announced earlier this month that it intends to release a commercial version as well.
Musk has highlighted a number of weird AI-related events in recent weeks, ranging from Bing Chat’s tendency for ‘creepy’ comments to ChatGPT‘s appearance before the media.
He claimed about five years ago that AI was “much more hazardous than nukes,” a stance he appears to have retained even as the world obsesses over ChatGPT and artificial intelligence.
While Elon Musk was a co-founder of OpenAI, the firm behind the viral chatbot, he stressed on Friday that this was “not what he had meant.” “.
For the uninitiated, Musk resigned from the OpenAI board in 2018 in order to avoid any future conflict as Tesla pushed into the AI industry.
“I had to focus on fixing a painfully large number of engineering and manufacturing challenges at Tesla (particularly) and SpaceX. Also, Tesla was competing for some of the same personnel as OpenAI, and I disagreed with some of the OpenAI team’s plans “He went on to clarify.
While Musk argues that ChatGPT or AI, in general, has ‘both positives and downsides’ and has enormous promise, he has also frequently predicted ‘huge peril’ alongside. As a result, wealthy businessman has urged for AI to be carefully regulated.
